A Conversation on the Culture based on the Ancient Artifacts: Bunun Spinning and Weaving

Due to the lack of elements shared in conventional art, the material culture of the Bunun rarely draws attention from the public. In the recent years, owing to the rhythmic movement of weaving and the strong art effect conveyed by the interlocking of fabrics, the Bunun weaving has become an important "traditional skill" that shows the custom and self-identification of the Bununs.

What role does the NMP play in the renaissance of the indigenous craft arts? The NMP as collected the artifacts that resemble the material culture of the indigenous tribes. On the given basis, what should be the next step?

Five Bunun people from Wulu Village, Hairui Township in Taitung County have been invited to this event. They will engage in discussions concerning the museum collections on weaving. The visitors would have a chance to see how the Bununs identify the clans through weaving techniques, patterns and compositions, as well as to imagine the usage of the ancient tools. An old man said the following during the event:

"When I look at these cloths, I recall the time when I was young and lived in the mountain, when my mum weaved under the dim kerosene lamp in the night. I think, in a time that was short in goods and materials, every piece of cloths represented the wisdom and the profound love of mothers."
